Volunteer Highlights

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the ReStore - without the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, we could not continue in our mission. To show our appreciation, we will periodically highlight one of our special volunteers.

Volunteer Spotlight- Kylin Fisher

Kylin began volunteering at the Alexandria ReStore this fall after moving to the DC area from Colorado.  She wanted to do a year of service after graduating from the University of Colorado.

Kylin has a passion for serving others. During her senior year of college, she was the President of the National Residence Hall Honorary, a community service and recognition organization.  In addition to planning several community clean-ups and clothing drives with that organization, she was also a lead facilitator for a new program that took Colorado University students to the area alternative high school to facilitate discussions on race, discrimination, economic statuses and youth positions in the community.  That program also had the youth make films about their community, which were then shown to City Council members in Boulder.

In the fall of 2010, Kylin will begin law school where she plans on studying public interest law.  After passing the Bar, she hopes to work for a non-profit, government agency, or advocacy group that focuses on low-income housing and homelessness, so for her, volunteering with Habitat is a perfect fit!

Kylin works at the ReStore as an administrative volunteer.  She helps to track volunteer hours, organize paperwork, and orient new volunteers.  “I really like the people and the environment here” says Kylin, “I like how you’re taken in right away and if you want, given responsibility. It’s a lot easier to stay motivated when you know that you will be missed both for what you do and on a personal level if you don’t come in. I also really like helping other people or the organization help the community. The work at the ReStore allows the larger Habitat organization to function.”

Kylin really has become a part of the Habitat family and we are so lucky to have her!

Thank you Kylin for your dedication and support!
